(Tuesday, 7:00 – 8:30 pm)
Meeting Topic: Talk by Steve Frankel on “Water: It’s a Deep Subject”
Outline:
- Amphoteric Nature – Water’s dual purpose as an acid or a base.
- Cohesion & Adhesion – Water is a sticky substance.
- Density Anomaly – Solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water.
- High Heat of Vaporization – It takes an incredible amount of energy to turn liquid water into gas.
- High Specific Heat – Water absorbs a lot of heat before its temperature rises, helping regulate the Earth’s climate.
- Polarity & Hydrogen Bonding – The uneven sharing of electrons makes water polar (slightly negative O, slightly positive H).
- Universal Solvent – Its polarity allows water to dissolve many substances.
I may include some other information about this fascinating substance not included in the list above.
